The U13 team had their first home game of the YBL league against Bournville Bears on Saturday 13th October. Confidence was high after last week’s great performance and the team started very strongly with Ben Ritson scoring back to back lay-ups and then Will Milne finishing two fast breaks for another 4 points. Jo Ritson finished the quarter with a nice basket to move the score to 10-5 at the end of the quarter in Storm’s favour.

Just like last week though the opposition came up with a big second quarter and outscored Storm 22 to 14. Oli Wilson and Jo scored two points each. Ben Ritson also scored an easy 2 and we finished the quarter well with two fast breaks being finished by Cole and another 2 baskets by Ben Ritson. We should have scored more points this quarter as we didn’t always finish our fast breaks at the basket and forced some difficult shots. We also struggled with our defensive rebounding something we can work on in training.

The third quarter was a tight affair as both teams were very evenly matched and knew that the game was on the line. The Storm fastbreak was again working well with Cole scoring back to back baskets at the start of the quarter and scoring one of his free throws. Ben and Alex added another basket each and Corwyn came on off the bench to add some energy to our defence and offence.

At the start of the fourth quarter the game couldn’t have been any closer with Bournville leading 35-33. The start of this quarter however proved pivotal as Bournville went on an early run with their no. 8 scoring 11 points in a 11-4 Bournville run. No. 8 for Bournville put in a telling performance scoring 35 points. Unfortunately we were creating lots of opportunities but the basketball just wasn’t going in. After taking a well needed timeout Jo Ritson and Ben Ritson executed the planned play to perfection and Jo scored a great basket to ignite a stunning comeback. Storm went on an exhilarating 12-2 run with two baskets from both Ben and Jo and baskets from Will and Alex. Sadly the clock was against us the Storm came up short by just 3 points 52-49.

Another great performance by Storm which showed an improvement over last week’s fantastic game. Storm certainly played the better team basketball and could have easily been the winners if we had converted more of our fast breaks and controlled the defensive boards better. George Borrett had a much better performance this week thanks to recovering from his ankle injury and it was great to see him working hard on offence and defence.

Next week we are away to Spartans in Stourport on Sunday the 21st and I am confident we can keep improving every match.
